Welcome to Our New Band Director!
Exciting news for New Palestine Bands as CSCSHC was able to hire an amazing new Director for our program! Please welcome Mr. Jon Carney, Director of Bands at New Palestine High School, overseeing all aspects of the NPHS Instrumental Program. Entering his twelfth year of teaching this year, Mr. Carney previously taught nine years in Beech Grove Schools and two years at Clifford Pierce Middle School, serving as Assistant Band Director at both locations. Prior to teaching, Mr. Carney marched Contra with the Phantom Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps for two years and attended Indiana State University, earning his Bachelor’s in Music Education, and the University of Illinois, earning his Master’s in Tuba Performance and Literature. Mr. Carney has had the opportunity to perform with professional symphony orchestras and brass chamber ensembles in Indiana and Illinois, has performed in Chicago’s Orchestra Hall with the University of Illinois Wind Symphony, and was lucky enough to spend two weeks in Spain performing chamber music while attending the University of Illinois. When he’s not at school, Mr. Carney enjoys spending time with his wife, Courtney, and two wonderful kids, Jackson and Harper.

New Palestine Band Director Farewell
It’s impossible to capture what all Director Humphries has meant to the New Palestine Band Program in a website news post, but “Thank You Mr. Humphries!” from everyone at NPHS!

On Tuesday, July 9th, 2019, Shawn A. Humphries announced he was leaving New Palestine High School after 20 years (15 as Director, 5 on the Marching Band Staff) to become the Southport Middle School Band Director, a move that will allow him to be closer to home and have more time with his wife and two young children. Thank you to his family as well for the understanding, the compassion and allowing him all of those long hours and weekends over the past many years. The Humphries Family will forever a part of our Band Family.

He has left the program in amazing shape. New Palestine Band is a growing and a well-oiled, competitive machine thanks to Mr. Humphries’ tireless work and hours poured into the program. All the accolades imaginable; Championships, Gold with Distinction, All-Band Awards, hundreds of students going to State Solo & Ensemble, competitive Marching, Concert, Jazz, Percussion, Guard, Honor Band and Dance programs. Under Mr. Humphries, New Pal Bands have traveled the country and even commissioned new pieces of work that we remain indefinitely. In addition to all of that, Director Humphries had the vision and leadership to guide our booster group to become a solid, stable and well-run association to support our band students. He will also have life-long friendships and most importantly has left an honest, sincere  and positive impact on hundreds of band kid’s lives. Thank you, we will miss you Mr. Humphries and look forward to supporting you at Southport and look forward to seeing you at Saturday competitions in the future!

Every year during spring break the Liberty University Wind Symphony goes on tour, performing at various locations around the country including the hometowns of a few of members. Two years ago LU traveled to Miami, Florida and last year they were able to travel to Mesquite, Texas. This year they are heading to St. Louis, Missouri with a stop in New Palestine!

Sam will conduct a piece for the wind symphony this semester as well, and he very excited to conduct on the stage he used to perform on! Whether you are a current member of the Dragon or an alum, whether you knew Sam or not, it is going to be an excellent concert with many fabulous musicians that you will not want to miss. We hope to see you there!
