Oahu’s nickname, The Gathering Place, is an apt one. The island is the hub of the
aloha state, home to more than 80 percent of the state’s population and the major
gateway to the Neighbor Islands. Honolulu, the state capital and business center,
and nearby Waikiki, the legendary beach resort with its nonstop action, give Oahu
its cosmopolitan flair.
Yet, Honolulu and Waikiki remain surrounded by stunning natural beauty. The
island’s splendid Waianae Mountains in the west rise 4,000 feet above sea level,
while the green Ko’olau range crossing the middle of Oahu rises to heights of
more than 3,000 feet. Pineapple plantations dot the center of Oahu, scores of
beach parks are found along the island’s coastline and the world-famous North
Shore surfing communities wind along the northern edge of the island.
